Corfu sits at the northern tip of the Ionian Sea, draped in cypress trees and olive groves, washed by water so clear you can count the pebbles at ten metres depth. Its beaches range from the broad and family-friendly to the vertiginously dramatic, and together they make a compelling case for the island as one of the Mediterranean's finest coastal destinations.
We've selected five beaches that represent the full spectrum of what Corfu has to offer, from the iconic to the barely discovered.
Paleokastritsa
The Jewel of the Ionian

Widely regarded as the most spectacular beach on the island, Paleokastritsa enchants visitors with a series of dramatic coves sheltered by towering green cliffs. The water shifts from jade to sapphire depending on the light, and the silhouette of a 13th-century monastery perched high on the headland gives the whole scene an almost mythological quality. Snorkelling here reveals underwater caves and rock arches that rival anything in the Mediterranean.
Best time to visit: early morning before the tour boats arrive. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for hire, and a small taverna serves fresh calamari and chilled white wine right on the beach.
Canal d'Amour, Sidari
Romance Carved in Stone

In the north of the island, the coastline at Sidari has been sculpted over millennia into a labyrinth of golden sandstone channels, arches, and sea caves. Legend holds that couples who swim together through the Canal d'Amour will remain together forever, making it one of the most romantically charged stretches of coast in all of Greece. The warm, shallow water trapped between the rock formations is perfectly calm, ideal for a long, unhurried swim.
Best visited in the late afternoon when the sandstone glows amber in the setting sun. The village of Sidari behind the beach has excellent tavernas for a sunset dinner.
Glyfada
Corfu's Golden Mile
Glyfada is the island's most celebrated sandy beach, a long, generous arc of fine golden sand backed by low hills and pine trees. The water is crystal clear with a gentle gradient, making it perfect for families with children. It has the most complete facilities of any beach on the island, including watersports hire, beach bars, and several excellent restaurants, yet it never loses the effortless beauty that defines Corfu at its best.
Arrive by 9am in peak season to secure a good spot. The beach extends far enough that you can always find a quieter section by walking to the southern end.
Agios Gordios
Drama on the West Coast
Agios Gordios is one of those beaches that stops you in your tracks the moment you crest the hill above it. A broad sweep of dark golden sand is framed on both sides by towering limestone cliffs and sea stacks rising dramatically from the surf, creating a natural amphitheatre unlike anywhere else on the island. By day it attracts a lively crowd drawn by the beach bars and watersports; as evening falls, the cliffs turn deep orange and the whole bay takes on a cinematic quality.
The famous Pink Palace beach resort is located here and welcomes day visitors. Watersports including parasailing and jet skiing are available throughout the summer.
Myrtiotissa
Europe's Hidden Paradise

Accessible only by a steep footpath through an ancient olive grove, Myrtiotissa rewards the effort with a beach of breathtaking purity. Nestled between sheer green cliffs, this small stretch of white pebbles and sand has been voted one of the finest beaches in all of Europe, and it is easy to understand why. The water is an almost impossibly vivid turquoise, the cliffs are draped in wild flowers, and the only sounds are the sea and the wind in the olive trees above.
The path down is steep and takes around 15 minutes. Wear good footwear and bring everything you need as there are no facilities. Worth every step.
Planning Your Corfu Visit?
The best time to visit is May to June or September to October, when the water is warm but the summer crowds have thinned. Most beaches are accessible by local bus or taxi, though hiring a small car gives you the freedom to explore the more remote coves on your own schedule.
